Sciatica is a term used to define the condition characterized by tenderness and pain along the sciatic nerve, usually occuring on one side of the body. There are two sciatic nerves found in the human body, one located on each leg. These are the longest nerves in the body. Each originates from various nerve roots that exit from the spinal cord, then thread through apertures in your sacrum and merge to form the main body of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve passes between layers of the gluteus medius and gluteus maximus, or buttocks, through the deep muscles of the back of the thigh, and down through the outer edge of your leg to your foot.
Sciatica is a condition many are affected by. Identified as pain in the lower back, buttocks, and occasionally radiating down the thighs, sciatica can cause weakness and numbness on the body.
