When it perceives danger, it triggers a powerful, instantaneous cascade of physiological responses designed to prepare you for fight, flight, or freeze. This is the sympathetic nervous system response.
In a healthy, well-regulated nervous system, the amygdala does an excellent job of distinguishing between real threats (like a car swerving into your lane) and non-threats (like the loud but harmless noise of a dropped book). However, through a combination of factors—such as chronic stress, trauma, inflammation, or even gut dysbiosis—the amygdala can become sensitized or hyper-vigilant. It’s like a smoke detector with its sensitivity dial turned up so high that it now goes off from a bit of steam from the shower or a piece of burnt toast.
This brings us back to the sauna and the high-intensity workout. What do these two activities have in common? They both induce a state of physiological arousal.
